Raf is lost in the crowd. One of a thousand English gentlemen with his perfectly ties cravat, polish boots, and faintly curled hair of a middling brown. Just a touch of auburn to it in sun. His features are good, but not striking. He is lean, but not really fit, and there is a softness to his middle that bespeaks a lifetime of good eating. He is relatively hearty and does not take sick often, does well on horseback and does like to occasional walk in the garden. He is typical. Ordinary. And has a face with less expressiveness than a statue.

Wizard's Workbook

Magical Apptitude
Charming with charms and a terror with transfiguration.

Rafferty has been completely hobbled by the domineering people in his life. And society. The proper British gentleman has been thoroughly exemplified in his upbringing. Never allowed to be anything else but the perfect specimen of good breeding and equally cultivated learning - or a pet - Rafferty chose to be the former over the later.

Raf reacts to nothing. At least not noticeably. It is easy to remain placid on the outside when you have been switched for bad behavior and mocked for taking comfort in a mother’s embrace after being wounded. Plus it just isn’t polite. He does not snicker, or smirk, or roll his eyes. He would probably thank you for setting him on fire, and apologize for the heat. He is a gentleman to the very end.

Inside, however, Rafferty finds he does have emotions of some sort. Quite often panic, he has noticed. The others seem more subdued and don’t grab his attention quite as often. Repulsion for things outside the ordinary. Regret over slips in proper ways of interacting with one another (rarely, if ever, are these slips Rafferty’s, but he still feels somehow responsible for other people's mistakes).

He has a definitive lack of passion. While a good lawyer, he is not evocative. Calm, collected and a studious purveyor of the facts. He treats a lot of life like a courtroom.

Jarrow :: Father
Clare Bella :: Mother
Connell :: Older Brother
Hollis :: Another Older Brother
Lady Ester Allen (nee Ballard), Countess Carlisle :: Aunt
It was a well done marriage. Clare Bella married up, and Jarrow landed himself the perfect broodmare. A woman who birthed three sons consecutively. Rafferty, the youngest and most useless of the lot, was very nearly sent away as an offering to the church. It seemed a good use for an extraneous son, two was plenty. One heir, and extra just in case, but what use is a third? However, Clare was rather attached to her youngest son.

He had been the easiest.

Not that she spent over much time with him. She had many duties as a Viscount’s wife, plus her ladies clubs and other interests. Raising children was a messy business. Rafferty spent most of his childhood either in the care of stern governess, sterner tutors, or being petted by his mother, which eventually grew vaguely uncomfortable. His brothers heaped an extra helping of ‘sissy’ and ‘baby’ on his head after any session of mother-kindness, so that Rafferty grew to dread those moments his mother remembered he was her favorite.

As for his father, he was the sternest of the lot. A loveless man who wouldn’t have known affection if it had crawled into his pants and bit him in the ass.

All this made for a rather reclusive child. Hungry for attention, but unwilling to suffer its consequences. He learned well though. Easily shaped into the perfect gentleman. Detached, studious, incapable of forming thoughts on his own. Rafferty did what he was told, and did it well. Even going into law on the suggestion of his father. He would need a career, there would be little money left for him after his two brother’s got their share. And he showed no particular flare for the more prestigious magics in his time as a Slytherin.

His life was a series of tasks to complete. Each one handed down from on high, by his father. Rarely directly, however. Even his marriage was another familial demand. Some wayward orphan hardly out of girlhood. Rafferty balked some. She was terribly young, and the gossip mill did her little in the way of favors. Wilting, they said. Though there was some harsh talk of it being a cover, others having remembered her as a spoiled, petulant brat of a child. Neither of which stirred Rafferty to interest.
